Forge of Empires

Forge of Empires at an unhurried pace

Forge of Empires is a city builder with a timeline through the middle of it. Huts at the beginning, something science-fictional at the end, and a long middle spent balancing population, production, culture and a stubbornly small amount of land.

Research drives everything. Each era brings better buildings with larger footprints, so progress is less about building new things than deciding what to knock down to fit them.

Guilds, a light tactical combat layer and a trade post give it shape beyond the builder loop, and none of it is compulsory - which is exactly why irregular play works.

What it quietly gets right

  • City through eras
  • Research tree
  • Tactical battles

Unhurried enough for

Anybody wanting a long, calm project that advances in ten-minute visits and cannot be damaged while they are away.

Too quiet if progress only feels real when somebody else is losing.

The unhurried first week

Do not rush the eras. Arriving in a new age without the goods to build in it is the classic trap and it costs weeks to recover from.

Join an active guild early. Guild expeditions are the best source of goods in the game and they cost nothing.
