Goodgame Empire

Goodgame Empire at an unhurried pace

Goodgame Empire is the kindest way into castle strategy. The first few hours are a well-built tutorial wearing a game costume: raise the walls, train some troops, take a nearby target, and every system introduces itself as it becomes relevant.

Underneath sits a real persistent map with alliances, sieges and long-running rivalries. What separates it from the heavier examples is the on-ramp - the early weeks forgive mistakes, so you can learn what a siege is without one ending you.

Veterans will find it lighter than Travian. Newcomers will find it the only one of the bunch they get a full week out of.

What it quietly gets right

  • Castle building
  • Army command
  • Alliance wars

Unhurried enough for

You are new to map strategy, or you want that genre in twenty-minute pieces rather than two-hour ones.

Too gentle if you want deep logistics and ruthless politics.

The unhurried first week

Walls and gate before the army. The game teaches offence first and new players get punished for believing it.

Pick an alliance where people talk. A silent one gives you nothing at all.
